Yaz Contraceptives Warning

Yaz is a contraceptive made by Bayer HealthCare and promoted to combat acne and severe menstrual depression. It is positioned as the go-to drug for women under 35. Yaz contains less estrogen but concerns have clouded the drug because it also includes a new progestrone called drospirenone. However, because drospirenone can increase postassium levels in the body it may increase heart problems for women who have liver and kidney damage.

It also appears that this drug puts women at higher risk for blood clots, strokes and other health problems than some other birth control pills. The FDA asked Bayer to correct their misleading advertising television commercials and for lacking proper quality control procedures of their hormone ingredients making plant.

Yaz is the biggest money maker for Bayer and their fastest growing product. Birth control pills change hormone levels. In 2001, the F.D.A. approved Yasmin which had a much lower level of estrogen. It also included a new type of progestin called drospirenone.

Two studies were done in Denmark and Holland which found a higher risk of venous blood clots for women taking newer progestins, including drospirenone.

The difficulty for Bayer is that they advertized the use of Yaz in a false and misleading way, overstating the drug's usefulness and promoting it for conditions like premenstrual syndrome for which the drug is not approved, and minimized serious risks associated with the drug.
