Q. Why are prescription drugs causing so many injuries?
A. Today, Americans spend hundreds of billions of dollars on prescription drugs and we take more drugs than ever before. Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are regulated by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), but that doesn’t guarantee their safety. Many drugs are put on the market without a thorough analysis of the possible risks and injuries. Drugs are frequently approved for sale to the public without adequate testing, and only after widespread distribution does the FDA find that the drug causes serious injury, or even death. There are many of these dangerous drugs still on the market and several taken off the market long after the damage was done.
Q. Have the amount of prescriptions increased?
A. Prescriptions Have Increased by 500%. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 66% of physician office visits result in prescription of one or more therapeutic drugs. The number of medications has increased by over 500% to over 17,000 trade and generic drug names. With direct advertising to the public, the pharmaceutical industry is trying to sell drugs directly to the public. They make suggestions in their ads that we, the public, would benefit from certain rugs and encourage us to suggest their use to our doctors. This puts a great deal of stress on the doctors who want to do the right thing and yet please their patients.
Q. Have Prescription Injuries Increased?
A. As a consequence of this growth is a jump in the number of injuries from prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Harm occurs from toxic over-dosages, dangerous interactions with other drugs, and inadequately-tested chemicals which do serious, permanent damage. Approximately 770,000 people are injured or die each year in hospitals from adverse drug events (ADEs),4 defined as an injury resulting from medical intervention related to a drug. Not all, but many, if not most, of these adverse drug events are preventable.

Q. How can one person fight against Big Pharma?
A. Pharmaceutical manufacturers have a duty to design and produce safe products and can be held liable for injuries or death caused by their products. Additionally, drug manufacturers have a duty to properly label their products, to ensure that all prescribed uses are safe. When a drug company fails to live up to these duties, consumers pay the price. The attorneys of Lord & Faris have represented hundreds of clients who have been victims of unsafe pharmaceuticals. A. The attorneys at Lord & Faris has successfully represented hundreds of clients who suffered harm, injury, or death from taking the diet drug combination Fen-Phen. There are several other diet drugs that have caused injuries such as Metra, Meridia, Redux and Hydroxycut, an over the counter body building drug. These products are marketed under the brand names Iovate Health Sciences and MuscleTech, and have been found to cause liver damage and other health problems. The FDA recalled Hydroxycut after at least one death was linked to use of these products.
Q. Why was there a recent warning about the Yaz Birth Control Pills?
A. Yaz is a contraceptive made by Bayer HealthCare and promoted to combat acne and severe menstrual depression. It is positioned as the go-to drug for women under 35. Yaz contains less estrogen but concerns have clouded the drug because it also includes a new progesterone called drospirenone. However, because drospirenone can increase potassium levels in the body it may increase heart problems for women who have liver and kidney damage. It also appears that this drug puts women at higher risk for blood clots, strokes and other health problems than some other birth control pills. The FDA asked Bayer to correct their misleading advertising television commercials and for lacking proper quality control procedures of their hormone ingredients making plant.
Yaz is the biggest money maker for Bayer and their fastest growing product. Birth control pills change hormone levels. In 2001, the F.D.A. approved Yasmin which had a much lower level of estrogen. It also included a new type of progestin called drospirenone.
Q. How have Ambian and other sleep medications caused severe adverse reactions?
A. In December 2006, FDA sent letters to manufacturers of products approved for the treatment of sleep disorders requesting that the whole class of drugs revise product labeling to include warnings about the following potential adverse events:
Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) and angioedema (severe facial swelling), which can occur as early as the first time the product is taken.
Complex sleep-related behaviors which may include sleep driving, making phone calls, and preparing and eating food while asleep.

Q. How does Ambien Affect users?
A. We were told by one of our clients that while taking Ambian, her son found her in the kitchen in the middle of the night making a full meal. When he asked her why she was cooking, she awoke from a deep sleep and was shocked to realize what she was doing. She has been interviewed on several national TV programs about her experience. Q. Is Ortho Evra birth control safe?
A. Researchers worry medical patches may become unsafe when exposed to heat from exercise, hot tubs or fevers, which could lead to fatal results such as stroke or heart attack.. “Overheating will increase absorption rates, even to toxic levels,” said Michael Cohen, director of the Institute For Safe Medication Practices. Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch.
Q. Why was Pergolide (“Permax”) and Cabergoline (“Dostinex”) used for Parkinson’s disease, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Lactation Prevention removed from the market?
A. Pergolide (marketed as Permax) and Cabergoline (marketed as Dostinex) were withdrawn from the market in 2007 because they cause heart valve damage. Two studies showed that patients with Parkinson’s disease experienced an increase in damage to their heart valves when prescribed these drugs. These drugs case heart damage similar to Fen-Phen.
