Dog/Animal Bites

Owners Are Responsible For Their Pets

Owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. If you or a loved one is bitten by a pet, there are some immediate steps you should take in addition to responding to any urgent medical needs the victim may have:

Steps To Take If Bitten By A Dog Or Other Animal

1.  Identify and, if possible, isolate the dog or animal.

2.  Obtain the dog or pet owner's name, address, telephone number and insurance information. If the pet is wearing a tag or other means of identification, note the licence number or other information on the tag.

3.  If there were witnesses, be sure to take their information.

3.  Note the location where the bite occurred and any other details of the scene.

4.  Seek treatment for the victim from a medical professional.

5.  Take photos of any wounds, torn or bloody clothing, etc.

6.  File a police report and contact your local animal control department.

7.  Consult with an attorney (Faris & Faris Law Office 651-641-1500) as soon as possible to determine your legal rights.

8.  Do not convey any information to insurers, adjusters, witnesses or others until you have consulted with an attorney to determine your rights under the law and whether you may have a claim against the pet's owner.

9.  Never sign any forms provided by others until you have consulted an attorney.
