Levaquin is a fluoroquinolone class antibiotic, which also includes the drugs Cipro, Tenquin, and Avelox. Of these class of drugs, Levaquin has had the most lawsuits filed alleging injury.
Levaquin may be prescribed as a liquid, tablet, or injection. It is manufactured by Ortho-McNeill, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary. It is prescribed for a variety of bacterial infections, from pneumonia to urinary tract infections. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1996. However, in 2002, a “black box” warning was added advising of the possibility of tendon rupture. In 2007 the “black box” warning was amended to include the risk of tendonitis.

Tendon rupture or tendonitis may affect the rotator cuff (shoulder), Achilles tendon, the hand and thumb, or the biceps. The risks increase for those over the age of 60 as well as for anyone also taking corticosteroids. There have also been reported side effects such as hair loss and nerve damage.
